Kuching, Sarawak’s riverine capital, once ruled by the Brunei Sultanate. During an uprising by the natives, James Brooke, an English adventurer, managed to quell the rebellion. In return, he was made the ‘Rajah’ of Sarawak in 1841. Thus began the ‘Brooke dynasty’ until the state was handed over to the British Crown in 1945. Buildings in and around the capital reflect the mark of this period, namely Fort Margerita, Astana, Court House and Sarawak Museum Kuching is named after the ‘Cat’, for some reason, though you are not likely to see the feline anymore than elsewhere. However, there is a Cat Museum. Kuching even dedicates a month-long Cat Festival for feline lovers.
