Laging off Perak on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, this tranquil island with its white sandy beaches and charming fishing villages will enthrall you.

The name Pangkor may have originated from the Thai word Pang Ko meaning beautiful island. How everothers believe it may have been a memorial to Pang Kui, a legendary Chinese adventurer said to have lent his skills in seamanship to the bands of pirates this island once sheltered.

Pangkors main attractions are undoubtedly the wonderful offering of its pristine beaches on the western coastline. Named after a legendary lovelorn princess, Golden Sands Beach or Pantai Puteri Dewi is one of the most popular beaches on the island. Located on the northwest of Pangkor, this 1.2 km strech boasts warm turquoise water fringed with tall swaying coconut palms. There beach here is ideal for sunbathing and recreational activities such as bird watching. Look out for hornbills said to roam the area.

Pasir Bogak Beach, a snorkeling site with an extensive reef and shallow waters, faces the channel between Pangkor and Pangkor Laut. Located nearby Pangkor town, this popular destination is a favourite haunt for picnickers due to its shady trees. Here, visitors can enjoy a kayak run or the simple pleasure of beachcombing.

Teluk Nipah is where tourists can enjoy both solitude and excitement by the beach. Take in the soothing lush greenery or browse the open-air stalls by the beach. A walk across to Giam Island at low tide will reward you with a treasure trove of marine life.

Head to the Pulau Sembilan groups of islands, 27 km south of Pangkor for a superb diving experience. The nine islands (sembilan means nine in Malay) are uninhabited with an abundance of colourful marine life.

Eating out in Pangkor is a delight as there are restaurants serving both local and international cuisine. Alternatively head to Pangkor town to enjoy fresh seafood.

Pangkor Laut

Pangkor Laut is a world-renowned tropical island destination. A 20 minute boat ride from Pangkor, it boasts one of the finest beaches in the Straits of Malacca. Sunset cruises can be specially arranged upon request. Couples can choose to have dinner by Emerald Bay which affords scenic views for a truly romantic experience.

Pangkor Laut houses an exclusive resort named after the island. For those seeking complete rejuvenation, pamper yourself at he luxurious Spa Villages.

Lumut is the staging point to Pangkor if arriving by road or rail. Located 83 km from Ipoh, the state capital, it is home to the countrys principal naval base and a port which services the hinterland. Teluk Batik, south of Lumut is popular for camping, boating and windsurfing. Nearby is Teluk Rubiah, another fine beach with a golf course. The Lumut International Yacht Club is a stopover whilw sailing the Straits of Malacca. Lumut is a 3-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur via the North-South Highway. It can be reached by taxi or bus from Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur or Butterworth.

Getting there

By Sea
Pangkor is a 40-minutes ferry ride from Lumut. There are departures every half hour.

By Air
The private carrier, Berjaya Air flies five times a week from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport nearby Kuala Lumpur to Pangkor.

Pangkor Laut Resort was rated as the best among the best by Conde Nast Traveller in 2003. Actress Joan Collins and renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti have graced the resort.

Maxwell Hill (Bukit Larut) is Malaysia’s oldest and smallest hill resort. Located in the state of Perak, near Taiping, Maxwell Hill (1035m) is unspoilt, cool, natural and beautiful. Temperature hovers around 15°C – 25°C, with nights sometimes dipping to 10°C. Located in the wettest part of the country, Maxwell Hill receives a lot of rain and mist hangs heavily for most parts of the day. Maxwell Hill is named after George Maxwell, a British resident of Perak who sought a hill station to escape from the heat of the lowlands, a hundred years ago. Tourist amenities are basic, and the only road, a narrow steep 13km tarred path with 72 breathtaking hairpin bends is accessible only through the government Land Rover.

Nature’s Splendour

Visitors who come up to Maxwell Hill are largely nature lovers, bird watchers, day trippers and tourists who seek a change of climate and pace. Expect to do very little except walk or unwind in nature’s splendour. However, bird life is plentiful. The best trail for birdwatchers is Gunung Hijau Trail which spirals up towards the summit of Gunung Hijau (1449m).

Perak’s mainland beaches include Teluk Batik, 6.5 km from Lumut. The white sandy beach is popular with swimmers, canoeists, picnickers and campers. There are chalets, food stalls, picnic areas, changing rooms and toilets. Teluk Rubiah, a tranquil beach is better known among golfers. The 18-hole Royal Teluk Rubiah Country Club offers scenic view of the sandy white beaches and blue waters on the first nine holes. Pantai Pasir Panjang is the location of the Segari Turtle Hatchery. Sited on 2.40 ha, the Segari Turtle Hatchery buys eggs from approved turtle egg collectors and hatches them in an enclosed warm sandy area. Once hatched, the hatchlings are released in the water along the coast. Turtles that visit this beach are the Green Turtle (Chelania mydas) and Olive Ridley (Epidochelys olivaecea). They land at any time during the year, but are said to be seen more during January to July. All rules pertaining to turtle conservation apply. Please observe them strictly. The Turtle Hatchery is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Pulau Pangkor takes about 40 minutes by ferry from Lumut Jetty. The island also has an airstrip. Pulau Pangkor is significant in the unfoldment of Malaysian history. It was under the Dutch rule in the 17th century during the tin trading days. It later came under the British, marking the first step towards British control over the Peninsular. A Dutch Fort (Kota Belanda) can be seen on the island. The eastern part of the island is occupied by fisherfolk who live in Pangkor Town whilst the western part is where the nicest beaches are. Among them are Pantai Puteri Dewi, Betanga Bay, Tanjung Teluk Batok,Teluk Nipah,Teluk Ketapang and Pasir Bogak. The latter, with its gently sloping coastline and clear sheltered water attracts the most number of visitors to the island. The 2km crescent shaped beach offers a host of facilities such as sailing, fishing, snorkelling, boating, jet skiing and wind surfing. It is well-served with tourist facilities and a range of hotel accommodation that suits every budget. Pangkor Laut, the second largest island off the coast of Perak is privately-owned. It has three main beaches Emerald Bay, Coral Beach and Royal Bay. Emerald Bay has been rated as one of the best in the world, and in 1999, Pangkor Laut was voted one of the best island resorts in the world by Conde Nast magazine. Pulau Sembilan is a group of nine islands located 10 nautical miles southwest of the Pulau Pangkor. It is about an hour’s boat ride from Pangkor Jetty. The largest of the nine islands is Pulau Rumbia, favoured by hard core anglers.
