Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary
Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary is sited on a large mangrove area that forms part of the Matang Forest Reserve in Perak. Given that the mangroves and mudflats supply a variety of food, birds (both resident and migratory species) are found at Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary. Over 160 species of birds have been spotted, among them the Milky Stork (local bird on the endangered list). Forty of them are migratory ones. The migratory shorebirds of the mudflats display magnificent navigational capablities necessary for their annual migration, when they leave their northern breeding grounds as far as Siberia between August and October and linger in sun-stroked havens like Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary until the following year in March to April. Migratory birds include the egret, Mongolian and Eurasian plovers, blackcapped kingfishers and the brown and tiger shrike. Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary is fortunate that it is located along the passage routes of these birds, and it is an ornithologist’s delight. Chalets are available at Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary.
