Labuk Bay
About an hour’s drive away from Sandakan Airport is Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. The 500 acre mangrove forest is home to these unique monkeys and thus especially reserved for them. Shoots and young leaves of the mangrove tree (Rhizophora mucronatal are favourite fodder of the monkeys, but they also apparently have a weakness for pancakes. Caretakers of the sanctuary feed them at 11.30am and 4.30am at specially constructed feeding platforms.
