Langkawi Island
Langkawi – the main island in a group of 99 idyllic islands off the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is famous for its legends and beautiful beaches. Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, Pantai Kok and Tanjung Rhu are among the island’s enchanting resorts that have wooed visitors from far and near. Its duty free port status makes shopping on the island an added draw. Apart from being a vacation spot, Langkawi has earned itself a reputation as the top international conference cum exhibition centre in the region. Pulau Langkawi is the main island in a group of 104 islands off the coast of Kedah. It is served by Langkawi International Airport, and ferry services from Kuala Perlis (Perlis), Kuala Kedah (Kedah) and Penang. The island is known for its numerous legends, the most famous being Mahsuri, a lady who was unjustly accused of adultery. Langkawi, is a duty-free island with well developed tourist attractions, good roads and a range of accommodation. It is the home of two major events the Le Tour de Langkawi, an annual cycling event for international professional cyclists and the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition [LIMA), a biennial event which showcases the latest state of art equipment and technology in the aerospace, air defence and civil aviation industries. Pulau Langkawi’s popular beaches are Pantai Cenang, Pantai Rhu, Pantai Pasir Hitam, Pantai Kok and Pantai Tengah. Activities include island hopping, water skiing and other water-based activities. Off the main island are Pulau Singa Besar, Pulau Dayang Bunting and Pulau Payar. Pulau Singa Besar, about 40 minutes by boat from Langkawi’s Kuah jetty is a Permanent Bird and Animal Sanctuary and makes an ideal island hopping stopover. Pulau Dayang Bunting (Island of Pregnant Maiden) is associated with folklores of childless couples blessed with children after visiting this island. It is another favourite stopover for island-hoppers. The huge island lake draws swimmers. Pulau Payar, a marine park, lies 19 nautical miles south of Langkawi. The waters off this island are zoned for preservation of marine life. Operators offer day excursions to the island. Snorkelling and diving are two main activities.
