National Park
Taman Negara is a restricted area. All bookings and arrangements must be made in advance at the Department of Wild-life and National Parks in Kuala Lumpur. It is a unique corner of earth virtually left untouched. There are numerous streams and small waterfalls which are always good for a dip. Rapid water boating up the river is a thrilling experience. Located in Pahang, Taman Negara (National Park), a protected area of 4,343 sq km, is one of the world’s oldest tropical rainforest. It houses Peninsular Malaysia’s highest mountain, Gunung Tahan (2,187 metres), a challenging mountain with dense growth, swift-flowing rivers and undulating terrain. It takes about nine days to scale up its peak and descend. The park is a favoured spots of anglers. It also attracts birdwatchers. More than 300 species of birds, among them Fireback Pheasants, Masked Finfoot, Fishing Eagle, hornbills and kingfishers have been reported.
About 2km from the headquarters is a 30 metre high canopy walkway. A number of marked trails are available for those wishing to explore lowland forests or mountains. Wildlife observation hides are provided at sites overlooking saltlicks. Taman Negara is served with visitor facilities including chalet accommodation, restaurants, guides and transport. It is accessible through the town of Jerantut, then via a three-hour boat ride to Kuala Tahan, the park’s headquarters.
