Perlis, the northernmost tiny peninsular state offers seafood temptations at medan ikan bakar (local seafood restaurants that are run by fishermen augmenting their fishing activities). Its other speciality is the Thai inspired laksa Perlis, a light, fish based soup with julienned herbs and translucent noodles. The limestone nature of this state also encourages sugar cane, a main crop of Perlis.

Kedah’s cuisine is spicier, largely due to the early influence of Indians during the spice trade. Traditional favourites are gulai nangka (curried jackfruit), sayur keladi (yam leaves), nasi ulam (herbal rice), tapai pulut (fermented glutinous rice) and laksa (rice noodles in soup).

Penang or pulau pinang is a Hawkers’ Paradise. Over 200 years ago, the early settlers from Thailand, Burma, Sumatra, Java, India and South China brought their culinary styles. Over the years, intermarriages and cross cultures resulted in hybrid cuisines. Popular hawker fare includes pasembur (seafood salad with peanut sauce), char kway teow (rice noodles), asam laksa (noodle soup), mamak mee (Indian Muslim noodles), soto ayam (rice noodles in chicken stock), Hokkien mee (Chinese style noodles) and tauhu bakar (grilled stuffed Soya cakes). Hawker centres are located at Bayan Baru, MacAlister Road, Anson Road, Burma Road and Pulau Tikus. Gurney Drive, on the northeastern coast of the island.

Perak’s food specialities are unique because they are largely the results of 19th century immigrant Chinese tin miners. Of mainly Cantonese, Hakka and Foochow descent, they developed culinary traditions, which are sought after by gourmands. Ipoh restaurants will unashamedly boast that they have the smoothest kway teow (flat noodles) silkiest Soya bean curd and the freshest bean sprouts. Certain localities in Perak, too, are associated with their specialities. Bidor is famous for its luscious guavas; Menglembu for its groundnuts; Kampar for its ‘chicken biscuits’; Bagon Datoh for its freshwater prawns; Tapah for its eels and so on. Of the Perak Malay ( melayu ) cuisine, rending tok ranks top. The spicy beef dish is cooked slowly with cloves, cinnamon, turmeric, onions, garlic, chilli paste and lemongrass, and lastly strips of young coconut flesh are added to impart the characteristic sweetish bite to the dish Popular food areas are Tun Abdul Razak Food Centre in Medan Kidd, Jalan Dato Tahwil Azhar Food Centre, Greentown Food Centre at Jalan Hospital, Perak Stadium Food Centre and Anika Selera in Taman Ipoh.

Malaysia’s history evolved out of invasions and influences due to its strategic position between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. Prior to arrival of Islam, a Hindu-Buddhist flourished in the northern state of Kedah, reputed to be the most ancient state in the country. Archaeological findings at Bujang Valley furnish evidence of a Hindu-Buddhist civilization that dates back to 300 AD. It thrived as an important centre of trade and commerce until the 13th century when it waned in importance because down south Melaka was establishing itself as a trading centre. Abundant in clove, nutmeg and pepper, Malacca attracted colonial powers who coveted the monopoly of the spice trade. The strategic importance of the state brought the Portuguese in 1509, then the Dutch who attacked and defeated the Portuguese in 1641, and ruled for 154 years. Then, came the British. The British, who already had two ports, Penang and Singapore, penetrated inland. By the 1920s, all the Malay States on the peninsula came under British protection. Malay nationalism and desire for self-rule was felt around the 1930s. A call for independence was made but the move was halted by the Second World War. Later, the movement resumed and independence was declared on 31 August 1957. In 1963, Malaysia was formed, bringing together the states of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak. Singapore, however, left the federation in 1965. Malaysia is a strong member of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) which was formed to promote regional growth and cooperation among member nations.

Guiding the people of a young and developing nation in endeavoring to bring about the national unity were the principles of Rukun Negara or National Philosophy. The five guiding principles acceptable to all races were Belief in God, Loyalty to King and Country, the Supremacy of the Constitution, the Rule of the Law and Mutual Respect and Good Social Behaviour. Awareness that existence of socioeconomic imbalances in a mufti-racial society will result in instability led to the creation of the New Economic Policy in 1970. By 1990 poverty had been reduced from 49.3 percent to 17.1 percent. 1990 roughly marked the end of the first generation of Malaysians after the country’s Independence from the British in 1957. Further careful economic and social planning for the future led to the National Development Plan, the successor of New Economic Policy. A new stage of development for Malaysians began with Vision 2020, the country’s blueprint for the future. It gave Malaysians a ‘mental picture’ to look ahead and become a fully-developed nation ‘in their own mould’ by the year 2020. Not only must Malaysians be developed economically, politically, socially, spiritually, psychologically, culturally but also fully developed in terms of national unity. The first objective of Vision 2020 is, in fact, for the Malaysian people to become a ‘united Malaysian nation with a sense of common and shared destiny. Malaysians must be at peace with themselves, territorially and ethically integrated, living in harmony and full and fair partnership, made up of one Bangsa Malaysia with political loyalty and dedication to the nation.

They must establish a ‘matured and liberal society in which Malaysians of all colours and creeds are free to practise their customs, cultures and religious beliefs’. Another challenge of Vision 2020 calls for the achievement of a ‘prosperous society, with an economy that is fully competitive, dynamic, robust and resilient. Yet another seeks to create a ‘ fully caring society and a caring culture’ in which the less fortunate, underpriviliged and disadvantaged are cared for. Vision 2020 also lists a ‘scientific and progressive society’, a society that is innovative and forward looking, one that is not only a consumer of technology but also a contributor to the scientific and technological civilization of the future. Guided by the visionary plan of the Government, Malaysians understand the great leaps they have to make in a globalised world. Young, dynamic and resilient, the people of Malaysia seek out the future with the knowledge that mutual respect for each other’s culture, traditions, religious beliefs and way of life will not only created a peaceful social environment for the nation of mufti-ethnic people but also result in political stability and a strong economy for the nation. Through unity in diversity, Malaysians look set to strive ahead confidently in the country’s fast paced development in trade and commerce, banking and finance, manufacturing, transportation, information technology and tourism.

Malaysia’s first hill station, Penang Hill is 830 meters high. Visitors can ascend to the top by either hiking up or by the funicular railway which has been operated since 1922. It is definitely a recommended place to seek out spiritual and physical renewal due to its tranguil and cool natural environment. Penang Hill was established by the British as their hill retreat from the balmy lowlands. The highest point was chosen and in 1922, a funicular railway provided the means of transport. Today, 4 Swiss-built funicular railway cars transport visitors to the top of the hill where legacies of the past are reflected in roads, bungalows and hillocks named after the early residents.

What to See and Do

With the funicular railway providing easy accessibility to the hill, half the fun lies in the journey which takes about 1/2 hour. The journey passes through dense jungle vegetation, and if one is alert monkeys can be spotted. The train stops midway along the hill for passengers to change cars.

The Summit

The summit is a well-maintained little square with a police station, post office, tea houses, restaurants, food stalls, souvenir stalls and colonial-style bungalows. There is also a small aviary. On the northern part is a small mosque and a Hindu temple. From the summit, flower-lined pathways lead downwards for visitors to stroll by. For the more adventurous visitor, there are trekking paths. One, if followed through eastward, leads to the Botanical Gardens. There are reputedly about 50 species of birds. On most days, Georgetown, the island’s capital with its tallest building, Komtar, can be seen quite clearly. The Penang Bridge, the longest in Asia, is visible only on clear days.

Eating Out

There are a number of small eating outlets, restaurants, tea houses, burger stalls, and hawker stalls. Western meals are available at restaurants in bungalows.

After Dusk

Night activities are limited to indoor board games and television, while the views of Georgetown at night can be a heady experience.

Penang referred to as ‘The Pearl of the Orient’ by the British who ruled the island for more than a century, has long been a popular beach getaway since they made it their favourite playground in the east. Popular beaches are found up north of the island Batu Ferringhi, Teluk Bahang and Tanjung Bungah. They are well-served by international chain hotels as well as a choice of mid to budget-priced accommodation. Waterbased activities like waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing and water scooters are plentiful. Round island cruises and island hopping are also available. Nightlife along the beach resorts is exciting, food is great and shopping is a pleasant experience.
